Student achievement earns awards
Some students graduating from SIAST this spring will receive special recognition for their accomplishments.
Tanner Barmentloo, a student at SIAST Kelsey Campus in Saskatoon, received the Student Innovation Award. As a student in the Electronic Systems Engineering Technology program, Tanner redesigned a therapeutic ultrasound power meter, lowering the total cost significantly. A cheaper meter is invaluable to developing countries who struggle to acquire necessary medical equipment.
In addition, three students will receive Outstanding Citizenship Awards for helping to make SIAST a better place for their fellow students:
Vanessa Kostiuk, who is currently finishing her second year of the Medical Radiation Technology program at SIAST Kelsey Campus, is an active volunteer that has served on the Students’ Association and was a grad rep for her class. She also stepped up and allowed herself to be interviewed by prospective students at applicant information sessions.
Basic Education student Mike Schultz at SIAST Wascana Campus in Regina has been able to maintain a 96 per cent average while tutoring his fellow students in the sciences, math and English. Mike founded the Math Club at the Regina Central Library and is the student editor of “Read Smart,” a bimonthly SIAST magazine. Mike is also a member of the Students’ Association and he founded the Wascana Gender Diversity Council, which focuses on such issues as changing gender roles, gender identity and sexual orientation.
Jeanette Murphy, who is currently enrolled in the Entrepreneurship and Small Business program at SIAST Woodland Campus in Prince Albert, has represented her peers on SIAST’s Aboriginal Council, Program Council, Advisory Council on Education Equity, the Saskatchewan Scholarship, Bursary and Student Loan Committee and has attended conferences across the country. Jeanette has also served two consecutive terms as the president of the Woodland Students’ Association.
