Nursing Education Program of Saskatchewan Second Degree Entry Option

Note

The last intake of students to the NEPS Second Degree Entry Option will begin in May 2010. Applications to the new Saskatchewan Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing program will be accepted in September 2010, and the first intake will begin in fall 2011.

The Nursing Education Program of Saskatchewan (NEPS) Second Degree Entry Option is a degree program. It provides individuals who already have completed a degree (or individuals who have made significant progress towards a degree) with the opportunity to receive a baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN) in a shortened time frame.

The NEPS Second Degree Entry Option is a partnership of SIAST's Nursing Division and the University of Saskatchewan's College of Nursing.

The NEPS Second Degree Entry Option follows the University of Saskatchewan Academic Schedule of breaks (Christmas and Spring).

Note

Applicants must submit a program-specific application form. The application period is from October 1 to January 15 each academic year.

The program provides:

  • full-time intensive study (six consecutive terms)

  • program completion in less than two calendar years


There are 78 seats available in the option. This option is located on campus at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. Clinical experiences may be assigned anywhere in the province.

Graduates will receive a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and be eligible to apply for licensure with the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses' Association (SRNA).

Career Opportunities

Graduates may practice in a variety of health care settings. These include direct care, education, administration and research. You will receive a sound educational base that will allow you to practice provincially, nationally and internationally.

With further education, specialization and/or experience, nurses may practice in a variety of areas. These include:

  • northern outpost nursing

  • neo-natal intensive care nursing

  • counselling

  • health education

  • school programs

  • hospice care

  • rural wellness centre nursing

  • home care

  • acute care psychiatric facilities

Admission Requirements


  • By April 30, 2010, you must have:

    • completed a baccalaureate degree of at least 90 credit units from a post-secondary institution recognized by the University of Saskatchewan, or

    • significant progress towards a degree in another field from a post-secondary institution recognized by the University of Saskatchewan. Significant progress is defined as completion of at least 90 credit units with a minimum of 36 credit units at the senior level.

  • Minimum overall average of 70% in the most recent 60 credit units
  • English Language Requirement. Applicants whose first language is not English must present evidence of proficiency in English.

    Note

    • Applicants should be in good health.

    • Once accepted into the option, you will be required to obtain Standard First Aid and CPR HeartSaver "C" AED or equivalent.

    • You must provide results of a criminal records check no later than the end of the first term.


    The following courses are pre-requisites to the option. You may be admitted with a maximum of two prerequisite deficiencies which must be addressed as noted below.

    • Humanities (3 cu) - Deficiency not allowed.

    • Social Science (9 cu) - Deficiency of 3 cu allowed. Deficiency must be cleared by the end of Term E.

    • Statistics (3 cu) - Deficiency allowed. Deficiency must be cleared by the end of Term B2.

    • Nutrition (3 cu) - Deficiency allowed. Deficiency must be cleared by the end of Term B2.

    • Anatomy and Physiology (6 cu) - Deficiency not allowed.



Admission Method

Competitive Entry

When the application period closes, your application will be ranked in the order of qualification. The applicants who are most qualified are accepted into the program first. The only competitive entry programs are the Nursing Education Program of Saskatchewan (NEPS) and the Nursing Education Program of Saskatchewan Second Degree Entry Option. There are established periods for receipt of applications for these programs.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) Availability

SIAST recognizes that adults learn in many different ways and through many different means. This includes acquiring knowledge and skills through life and work experience or non-formal training.





Transfer Credit and Future Study Options

SIAST may recognize formal learning from other educational institutions.



  • NEPS 150  Philosophical Framework for Nursing
  • The course provides an opportunity for participants to become familiar with philosophical approaches to nursing and health care in Canada. It introduces the participants to concepts of health, critical social theory, and primary health care as the framework for nursing practice. The historical, political and social context in which nursing is practiced will be discussed. This course is open only to participants in the Second Degree Entry Option of the NEPS.

  • NEPS 151  The Profession of Nursing
  • The course introduces the participants to nursing as a professional discipline. The core components will be caring, the profession of nursing, patterns of knowing, legal and ethical considerations, clinical decision making, and introduction to research and theory-based practice. This course is open only to participants in the Second Degree Entry Option of the NEPS.

  • NEPS 152  Foundations of Nursing Practice
  • The course provides participants with opportunities to explore fundamental nursing concepts and to develop the skills necessary to perform related nursing interventions. This course is open only to students in the Second Degree Entry Option of the NEPS.

  • NEPS 153  Communication and Education for Health
  • The course introduces the concept of self in relation to others as a basis for interpersonal communication. Communication facilitating helping relationships in individual, group, and health education situations will be examined and practiced. Participants will access and develop resources to facilitate health education for health promotion. This course is open only to participants in the Second Degree Entry Option of the NEPS.

  • NEPS 154  Introduction to the Practice of Nursing
  • The course provides an opportunity for participants to integrate concepts from pre-requisite courses in a practice setting. This course is open only to participants in the Second Degree Entry Option of the NEPS.

  • NEPS 250  Microbiology for the Practice of Nursing
  • The course introduces participants to theoretical concepts of microbiology in relation to health and disease processes in humans. This course is open only to participants in the Second Degree Entry Option of the NEPS.

  • NEPS 251  Pharmacology for the Practice of Nursing
  • The course introduces basic theoretical concepts related to pharmacology and nursing pharmacotherapeutics. This course is open only to participants in the Second Degree Entry Option of the NEPS.

  • The course focuses on participants developing an understanding of selected challenges to the health of adults and of related nursing practice. Concepts related to acuity and chronicity will be explored within a primary health care framework. This course is open only to participants in the Second Degree Entry Option of the NEPS.

  • The course provides participants with opportunities to explore selected evidence-based principles of nursing practice and to develop the skills necessary to perform related nursing interventions. The concept of patient safety will be explored from a system perspective. This course is open only to participants in the Second Degree Entry Option of the NEPS.
