You will learn how to use basic hand tools and measuring devices used in the machinist trade. You will also learn how to set up and safely operate standard machine tools (i.e. lathes, drill presses, milling machines, shapers and grinders).
Trade time and academic credit may be available for graduates who find employment in the trade and register as apprentices. Please contact the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission for further information. Many large firms employ machinists. Other firms rely on the services of machinists who work in general machine shops.Graduates may find employment in manufacturing industries, equipment repair shops, custom machine shops, steel mills, metal fabrication plants, power generating plants, food processing plants, mines, welding repair shops, automotive engine rebuilding shops and machine manufacturing companies. Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) Availability
SIAST recognizes that adults learn in many different ways and through many
different means. This includes acquiring knowledge and skills through life
and work experience or non-formal training. Such learning may qualify you
for equivalency in a SIAST course through our process for Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition.
Frequently asked questions regarding PLAR for this program are answered in the PLAR Fact Sheet (pdf - 35 KB). A detailed PLAR Candidate Guide (pdf - 900 KB), which includes a self-audit for all PLAR-ready courses, has been developed for this program. This information guides a candidate through all steps in the PLAR process.
Visit the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition home page for general information about PLAR. You can check out the benefits, how to determine if you are a candidate, PLAR-ready courses and the PLAR Inventory Database (where you can select a program of study to determine which courses may be available).
For assistance, consult with a PLAR counsellor or call 1-866-goSIAST (467-4278).
